The blasts on Alamdar road in Quetta, which killed over 100 people, gained the attention they deserved when the Hazaras, who were the targeted victims, refused to bury their dead till government took some serious action against their genocide. For once it brought the minorities and majority of Pakistan together. All over the country, sit-ins and protests were held till the government bowed down to the demands of the Hazara people.
While the incident made us realize that we can unite for a cause and make our voices heard, it also sparked up a debate. Many people spoke up against the Hazara genocide because they were Muslims and Muslims shouldn’t be killed. Fair enough. The Hazaras are an educated lot who do not, in any circumstances, encourage or practice violence. There is no reason for anyone to hate them and go ahead to kill them. Then again, there is no reason for anyone to go ahead and kill anyone.
It is quite surprising that many people believe that they should only speak up when it’s them who are being prosecuted. It is understandable that one feels strongly for his own people. But that doesn’t mean that one should disregard other innocent lives that are being sucked out brutally.
This behavior is not only limited to Muslims. The country which claims to be a champion of human rights, which claims to be fighting against terror doesn’t care if hundreds of children are being killed in drone attacks. But the president of that very same country breaks down when the ‘American kids’ are the victims. Every speech I’ve heard of President Obama is about protecting American people. American people, who live miles away from the terrorist hideouts. It is never about the people who are actually the victim of both, the terrorists and the war against terror. Never have I heard him say a single line which betrays any sympathy for the thousands of innocent lives that have been lost to protect the ‘American people’. While the idea of innocent people dying horrifies him, he never bothered to condemn the civilian casualties in Gaza last year. Were they not humans? Or does he think the world only exists to accommodate American people?
This goes for anyone who disregards violence against anyone but themselves. Everyone has a right to live. This planet is not reserved for Muslims or Jews or Americans. It is for all creation. There is nothing heroic about defending yourself, when you are the target you don’t have any other choice but to fight back. Humanity is to speak up for all the victims of terror and injustice whether they are related to you or not. And in the end humanity is all that counts.
First they came for the communists
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a communist
Then they came for the socialists
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a Jew.
Then they came for the Catholics
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a Catholic
Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak for me
